Knovel Case Studies

Knovel Case Studies provide good examples of how companies, partners and researchers use Knovel. Learn about Purdue University’s "Treasure Hunt" assignment and how Knovel helps a group of Astronomers track down a rare text. The case studies are available in pdf format in the About Knovel section of the web site.

"Knovel is a well-used product at the university."

Kool Tips: Download a List of Titles

Knovel's title list export feature creates a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet file with a number of fields of information, including the title name, author, subject area, ISBN number, and a permanent Knovel URL for the title. The title export can be filtered to display all titles, titles in your subscription only, new titles, and more. Also part of the title export function is the ability for account contacts (those who subscribe to Knovel) to receive an automatic email each month containing information about newly added titles to their subscription. For more information about the title export feature, visit http://www.knovel.com/knovel2/content.jsp.

Kool Tips: Case Sensitivity in Knovel Search

You may have noticed in today's Tutorial that we expressed the Boolean operator AND in all capital letters. This is done only as a helpful visual guide to the user. It is easier to spot the Boolean operator when it is expressed in all caps. However, words in the Knovel search box are not case sensitive. We could have expressed today's search as "thermal conductivity" and aluminum 5052 or as "THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY" AND ALUMINUM 5052 with the same exact result. Remember: Knovel searches are NOT case sensitive.

Kool Tips: Which Titles Can I Access Right Now?

Screenshot

Many corporations, academic institutions, and government agencies subscribe to Knovel Library on behalf of their employees or students. Sometimes, users from these organizations are aware they have access to Knovel Library, but they don't know (or can't remember) which titles and Subject Areas are part of their subscription. With Knovel's revised interface released this past June, it's easy to know exactly which titles you can access right now. Go to the Knovel Library home page. In the middle of the page, click on the My Subscription tab. That's it! You'll see a complete list of all titles that are part of your subscription. You can apply a number of different filters for viewing, including an option to view them by Collections. You even have the option to download the entire list to an Excel spreadsheet file. Kool.

KOOL TIPS: British and American Spellings

You may have noticed in today's Tutorial that the search term entered is the American form of the word color. However, the search results find and display the British form colour. Knovel has cross-indexed 14,805 British and American terms, making it easy for you find exactly what you're looking for!

KOOL TIPS: Citing Sources on Knovel

Knovel has a handy "Citation" link that allows users to create a properly formatted citation for any reference book or database in the Knovel Library.

Here's how it works:

  1. Go to the Table of Contents for any title in Knovel Library.

  2. Click on the "Citations" link near the top of the TOC.

  3. A box will open. Input the cited page number(s) in the box and click the "Continue" button.

  4. That's it! An MLA (Modern Language Association) properly formatted citation will appear.

Knovel has programmed all necessary variations (single author, multiple authors, type of publication, etc.). All you need to do is indicate the page(s) and copy/paste the resulting citation. Give the Citation link a try. We hope you agree--it's kool!

KOOL TIPS: Knovel Spine Labels

Some librarians and information specialists maintain both hard-copy and electronic versions of the same titles. Library patrons may not realize that a particular hard copy title is now available in e-format. Knovel can help! If you are a librarian with a subscription to Knovel, and if you have hard copy versions for any of the titles available on Knovel, we have "spine labels" you can use to place on the spines of the hard copy titles in your collection. The spine label is a small circular label showing the Knovel "K" logo with the words, "This book is available online" and the Web site address: www.knovel.com. Patrons can easily identify whether or not a given title is available in the Knovel Library by glancing at the shelf! If you would like to order Knovel spine labels for your library, contact Knovel Customer Support at support@knovel.com, or call (203) 748-6066.
